Urban Consolidation Centres Could Help Improve Air Quality
Urban Consolidation Centres (UCCs) could play a key role in reducing congestion and improving air quality in UK towns and cities, according to research from the Transport Systems Catapult (TSC). The study highlighted how consolidating deliveries before entering urban areas can significantly reduce the number of vehicle journeys and lower harmful emissions.
Using University Hospital Southampton as a case study, the report found that deliveries could be reduced from 867 per week to just 25 by using a consolidation model operated by Meachers Global Logistics. The approach not only improves operational efficiency but also helps reduce traffic congestion, road safety risks and environmental impact in densely populated areas.
The findings come as cities face increasing pressure to meet air quality targets and manage growing freight volumes linked to e-commerce and urban distribution. While consolidation centres can require additional investment and coordination, industry experts believe they offer a practical long-term solution for creating cleaner, more sustainable urban logistics networks.
